Conceived and initiated by leaders from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) and Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) in the fall of 2017, Back from the Brink: Bringing Communities Together to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is a collaborative effort, designed to not be owned by any single individual or organization.
A Steering Committee that includes representatives of UCS, PSR, PSR-LA, Greater Boston PSR, Soka Gakkai International- USA, United Church of Christ, PSR Maine, Chesapeake PSR, New Hampshire Peace Action, the Syracuse Peace Council, and Western States Legal Foundation manages the coalition and campaign.
Back from the Brink (BftB) offers different options for individuals and organizations to engage and deepen their involvement. The first way that people generally engage in BftB is to endorse the campaign.
From there, organizations can deepen their involvement by becoming Coalition Partners. Coalition Partners support the coalition and campaign through various means such as communicating with supporters and other stakeholders about the campaign or the issue of nuclear weapons; making a financial contribution; attending coalition events and meetings; promoting the campaign on social media; or helping grow the coalition’s relationships and partnerships with other organizations, influencers and decision makers.
Back from the Brink has also established a distributed organizing model for local activism consisting of self-organized BftB “hubs” founded and organized by local BftB activists, volunteers, or allied groups. Hubs are meant to offer opportunities for sustained local BftB activity and give anyone a mechanism to act and invite others to join them and act. Hubs can serve as a home for folks to connect with others, engage in public education and advocacy activities, and, importantly, show up for other movements/causes in their communities and build relationships with them.
Back from the Brink holds monthly Local Organizing Meetups to assist and coordinate local actions and build support for Back from the Brink policies through resolutions, media efforts and engaging with local/state elected officials, members of Congress and other organizations.
