Davis CAN members Sarah Pattison, Genevieve Colborn, and Judy Reynolds with Lucy Brazil, District Director for Congressman Thompson (2nd from left), at the Congressman’s district office.
The Davis Committee Against Nuclear Weapons (Davis CAN), in collaboration with PSR Sacramento, is one of Back from the Brink’s newest local Hubs located in northern California. Davis CAN is a small group of private citizens who work together to promote nuclear disarmament through education and advocacy. In the past, they’ve worked closely with local and state elected officials to get nuclear disarmament resolutions passed by the City of Davis and the California State Legislature.
In February 2025, six members of Davis CAN met with Lucy Brazil, Rep. Mike Thompson’s District Director at his office in Woodland, CA and urged him to co-sponsor three anti-nuclear Congressional resolutions: H. Res. 317 (McGovern & Tokuda), H. Res. 669 (Lieu), and H. Res. 100 (Foster). They also urged him to join the Congressional Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group, co-chaired by fellow California congressman, Rep. John Garamendi.
On May 6, they received news that Rep. Thompson agreed to join the Working Group and to co-sponsor H. Res. 669, which makes it the policy of the U.S. that no first-use nuclear strike shall be conducted absent Congressional approval through a declaration of war. The Hub will continue strategizing to see whether we’re able to make any movement with the Congressman on H. Res. 317 and 100. Meanwhile, Davis CAN is grateful to Rep. Thompson for taking these important steps and adding his name and leadership to these critical efforts.
