This summer marks 80 years since the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and across the nation, Back from the Brink Hubs are organizing powerful community events to honor the victims, hear from hibakusha, and renew the urgent call for a nuclear weapons‑free world. From teach‑ins and film screenings to panel discussions and vigils, these gatherings invite the public to reflect on the legacy of these bombings and to engage in meaningful action toward nuclear abolition.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki Remembrance Day Event

This public event includes a luncheon program to be presented by the Davis Committee Against Nuclear Weapons and will remember the victims of past nuclear bombings and examine their meaning for us today. The program will include a keynote address by Naomi Egel, Assistant Professor in the Department of International Affairs at the University of Georgia, on the topic “Legacies of Nuclear Weapons Today.” The Committee will also recognize elected officials at all levels of government in Yolo County who have taken steps to reduce the threat of nuclear weapons. The public is welcome to attend and lunch will be provided. (A $10 donation is requested for lunch.)

Res. 317 and its companion legislation in the Senate, or thanking Reps. DeLauro & Larson for their leadership in cosponsoring. Origami crane kits will also be available, symbolizing peace and hope.

Join us on August 6 in Washington, DC to mark Nuclear Prayer Day, a global prayerful commemoration of these anniversaries. A world united in moments of silence, in words spoken from the heart, and in a sure vision of a world beyond nuclear weapons – such moments will anchor and sustain our commitment as we work together to bring an end to the nuclear threat. This event will feature prayers for a world free of nuclear weapons, reflections from faith leaders and the nuclear disarmament community, music, and calls to action to support legislative measures and educational efforts to build a movement to halt and reverse the nuclear arms race.

Boston Hiroshima & Nagasaki 80th Commemoration

The event will feature videos and live speeches from Hibakusha (nuclear weapons witness/survivors), scientists and leading nuclear disarmament movement leaders from around the world, film and photographic showings and displays, and in the Japanese tradition memorial lantern floats. Beyond the educational work that will be central to the commemorative events, organizers will be urging people to support the Back from the Brink campaign, H. Res. 317, as well as the Responsible Investment bill (S.767/H.1264), which would divest Massachusetts pension funds from WMD producers and those who finance them.

August 6 and 9, 2025 mark the 80th year since the U.S.’s atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, immediately killing between 129,000 and 226,000 people, with many thousands dying later from radiation exposure. We remember their suffering, and call on the nuclear weapons states to take weapons off hair-trigger alert, and negotiate a rapid phasing out of weapons of mass destruction.

This is a non-violent action and people are encouraged to bring signs and banners calling for the company to cease making components for nuclear weapons and for the Israeli military. Afterwards, there will be a vigil and speakers.

The exhibit, “Horror To Hope: Stepping Back from the Brink” features a selection from “The A-Bomb and Humanity,” a set of 40 exhibition panels created by the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo). Comprising of photographs, drawings, and first-hand accounts of survivors from the atomic bombings, creators of this collection hope to “arouse world public opinion for the elimination of nuclear weapons.”
