On Tuesday, August 28, the California Senate voted to approve AJR 33, a resolution introduced by Assemblymember Monica Limón that urges the U.S. to embrace the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and implement important protective nuclear policies.
On August 8, 2018, the Los Angeles City Council voted to approve a resolution that urges the U.S. to embrace the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and implement important protective policies such as ending the President’s sole, unchecked authority to launch a nuclear attack, taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert, and canceling U.S. plans to replace its entire nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons.
On August 6, 2018, the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Baltimore became the first major city to endorse Back from the Brink: The Call to Prevent Nuclear War. The Baltimore Resolution, passed unanimously, asks Congress to make these changes to reduce the risk of nuclear war:
The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), an organization that has endorsed the Call to Prevent Nuclear War, and the largest Presbyterian ecclesiastical body in the United States, approved the resolution, also known as an “Overture”, by consent at its biannual meeting in St. Louis, Missouri on June 20, 2018. The Overture was titled “On Seeking God’s Peace Through Nuclear Disarmament in the 21st Century.”
