Nearly a year of organizing and coalition-building has brought Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s largest city, to the brink of passing a Back from the Brink resolution by its Common Council.
Beginning in June 2024, with help from BftB’s Wisconsin Hub, 18 peace, justice, environmental, religious, and community groups were invited to join the campaign and lay the groundwork for passage. The Milwaukee core group included leaders from Peace Action-Wisconsin, Milwaukee Veterans For Peace, the United Nations Association, and 350.org-Milwaukee. They encouraged their members to contact alderpersons by phone and email to support the resolution when it was introduced in February.
On March 17th, the Council’s Judiciary and Legislation Committee unanimously recommended approval and sent the measure to the full Common Council for final approval on April 2nd. Although adoption seems likely, organizers are taking nothing for granted and continue to ask supporters to contact their Council representatives to ensure passage.
