California Passes Two Resolutions, Endorses Call to Prevent Nuclear War
On Tuesday, August 28, the California Senate voted to approve AJR 33, a resolution introduced by Assemblymember Monica Limón that urges the U.S. to embrace the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and implement important protective nuclear policies.
LA City Council Unanimously Votes to Adopt a Resolution on Nuclear Weapons
On August 8, 2018, the Los Angeles City Council voted to approve a resolution that urges the U.S. to embrace the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and implement important protective policies such as ending the President’s sole, unchecked authority to launch a nuclear attack, taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert, and canceling U.S. plans to replace its entire nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons.
City of Baltimore Becomes First Major City to Endorse Back from the Brink
On August 6, 2018, the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Baltimore became the first major city to endorse Back from the Brink: The Call to Prevent Nuclear War. The Baltimore Resolution, passed unanimously, asks Congress to make these changes to reduce the risk of nuclear war:
General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Passes an “Overture” Calling for a Nuclear Free World
The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), an organization that has endorsed the Call to Prevent Nuclear War, and the largest Presbyterian ecclesiastical body in the United States, approved the resolution, also known as an “Overture”, by consent at its biannual meeting in St. Louis, Missouri on June 20, 2018. The Overture was titled “On Seeking God’s Peace Through Nuclear Disarmament in the 21st Century.”
US Conference of Mayors Unanimously Passes Nuclear Weapons Resolution
On June 12, The US Conference of Mayors, the nonpartisan association of 1,408 American cities with populations over 30,000, unanimously adopted a resolution “Calling on the Administration and Congress to Step Back from the Brink and Exercise Global Leadership in Preventing Nuclear War.”
Town of Amherst Unanimously Passes Nuclear Weapons Resolution
During Amherst’s final town meeting before switching to a new town council form of government, members unanimously voted to pass the resolution below supporting the policy points of The Call to Prevent Nuclear War.
