As the world marks 81 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, BftB’s Dr. Bob Dodge reflects on the growing dangers of a renewed global nuclear arms race. He argues that today’s geopolitical tensions demand urgent action to reduce nuclear risks, honoring the mantra of the hibakusha: “never again.”
In this op-ed, BftB’s Dr. Bob Dodge argues that expanding U.S. plutonium pit production is unnecessary, costly, and dangerous, increasing risks to workers, frontline communities, and the environment while fueling a new nuclear arms race. He proposes that the entire expansion plan should be put on hold and a more complete and transparent PEIS process that addresses the entire environmental, economic, and health impacts to the communities directly at risk should be implemented.
