Washington State Hub members gather for a hybrid statewide strategy session.

In the shadow of the home port for one of the largest collections of nuclear weapons in the world at Naval Base Kitsap, the Washington State Hub has been helping to grow the movement locally for a world free of nuclear weapons.

Last April, advocates from No More Bombs, Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR), Back from the Brink (BftB), and others successfully encouraged the town of La Conner to pass the first BftB resolution in Washington.

Over the past few months, Hub members have gathered over 300 signatures on a Back from the Brink petition while tabling and clipboarding at farmer’s markets, commemorations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Days, and public transit stations around the Greater Seattle area.

They’ve had a lot of fun meeting new members of different backgrounds, exchanging ideas about the nuclear threat, and making connections to labor unions and other community groups. The Hub enjoyed chatting with many of these new members over the phone and engaging some of them in a recent statewide BftB strategy session.

In collaboration with friends at WPSR, Pax Christi Northwest, Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, and others, the Washington Hub is currently advocating for BftB resolutions in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham, Redmond, Olympia, and King County, and also encouraging a growing number of local and state elected leaders to support our movement.

Many members of the Hub remember when the Nuclear Freeze movement helped to dismantle 80% of the nuclear weapons that have ever existed in the 80s and 90s, and they’re determined to work together with old and new friends to eliminate the last 20%.
