On August 23, 2023, the South Salt Lake City Council unanimously adopted a resolution and proclamation that endorses the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and Back from the Brink’s (BftB’s) common sense policy solutions to prevent nuclear war. The effort was led by BftB Hub Utah Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (UCAN) which also worked to get a resolution adopted by Salt Lake City in April, 2019.) An article in the Salt Lake City Weekly, “Utahns rejected nuclear weapons in the ’80s. Local advocates want to do it again.” describes the effort and Utah’s history of nuclear disarmament activism.
On September 5, the City of New Haven, Connecticut unanimously adopted a Back from the Brink resolution. The effort was led by the New Haven Peace Council in advance of the September 21 UN International Day of Peace. The New Haven resolution notes that “the City of New Haven has always stood against the danger of nuclear war by being a Peace Messenger City, annually observing Hiroshima and Nagasaki Days, and in June 2023 welcoming the anti-nuclear war peace boat, the Golden Rule, to our city.”
Back from the Brink congratulates all those involved in these remarkable efforts!
