Please join Back from the Brink and nuclear abolition activists throughout the world on January 22, 2021, for a day of action to celebrate the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons’ (TPNW) entry into force. This momentous occasion is what our colleagues at the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), who are leading this historic effort, have called “ the beginning of the end of nuclear weapons.”
The TPNW makes it illegal under international law for nations that are party to the treaty to “develop, test, produce, manufacture, otherwise acquire, possess, or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.” It was adopted by 122 nations in July 2017 and to date has been signed by leaders of 85 countries and ratified by 50 nations. Click here to learn more about TPNW and its entry into force.
We especially encourage organizers of Back from the Brink resolutions to participate on January 22 by demonstrating your town or city’s support for nuclear abolition. Consider inviting representatives who sponsored, introduced, or voted to adopt your resolution, as well as colleagues and allies who supported it. Be sure to send a note or press release announcing your event to local reporters.
Many activists will hold banners near prominent locations, such as City Halls, local landmarks, nuclear facilities, universities or financial institutions involved in the nuclear enterprise. Here is an example of a banner design that can be replicated or modified. If you’d like to include a Back from the Brink logo in your sign or banner, you can download a logo here. Photos and videos from the day of action will be documented as a compelling visual representation of solidarity and support for the TPNW.
We understand that given the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be difficult to participate in a safe, socially-distanced event. But there’s lots you can do on your own.
- Consider writing a letter to the editor of your local paper. Let us know if you’d like our help. We can provide suggested talking points and suggestions for how to connect it with local issues.
- Are you on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram? Drop us a line at info@preventnuclearwar.org and we can suggest sample text to help spread the word with your networks
- Additional ideas for action can be found on a Nuclear Ban Treaty Entry Into Force Facebook group here.
- You can also join a Zoom meeting for grassroots activists at 7 p.m. EST on December 17 to learn what others are planning – just send an email to nuclearbantreatyEiF@gmx.com and ask for the registration link.
It’s been a tough year to say the least, and we’re thrilled to be able to celebrate the TPNW entry into force on January 22. Please let us know if you plan to participate in the day of action or if you have any questions at info@preventnuclearwar.org.
